What is a Concealer?A Concealer or a Colour Corrector is similar to but usually thicker than a Foundation. It can be used to cover dark circles, age spots, blemishes, large pores and so on. You can wear concealer in addition to Foundation or on its own. Both help you to achieve the appearance of an even skin tone. How do I choose a Concealer? If you like to choose by Formula, Then there tends to be 4 main categories of concealers: Liquid - Probably the most Popular Choice. It comes in several coverages from sheer to full and usually three finishes satin, matte or radiant. Liquid concealers work well on most Skin Types with the exception of very dry skin. With very dry skin, sometimes using a liquid formula will emphasise it even more. I would recommend setting Liquid Concealers with some Powder over the top. Cream - I usually associate Cream Concealers with a much heavier coverage. As a personal preference I would use a Cream Concealer to cover any blemishes or imperfections but would refrain from using them under the eyes if they are particularly thick in consistency as they tend to crease. Stick - Perfect for any touch ups. Stick Concealers tend to be very full coverage with a rich, creamy texture. It is best used on Normal, Dry and Sensitive Skin. For Oily skin I would advise against a stick concealer because its tends to melt and move around throughout the day and it can also clog your pores. Powder - Powder Concealers tend to be incredibly long wearing and are a perfect option for those with Sensitive or Oily Skin. It also doesn’t need to be set because it’s already in a powder form. What can I use Concealer for?Dark Circles - Many concealers are made just for this purpose and they usually come with a sponge tip applicator. It is best recommended to use something Peach/Salmon under the eye if you’re Fair or an Orange/Red under the eye if you’re Dark to colour correct first. Then apply concealer over the top. Some people like to go a shade or two lighter under the eye in their concealer to achieve a more brightening effect. Personally, under my eyes I like to start by using a Cream Corrector and then layer a Liquid Concealer on top. Breakouts - Breakouts on the skin tend to be Red in colour. If you want to go one step further to cover a pesky breakout then you can do a bit of colour correcting. As Green is opposite Red on the Colour Wheel, this is the shade that will best counteract and correct any spots. You would then typically double up with a concealer on top that is the closest match to your Foundation or Skin Colour. When using Concealer to cover a breakout, remember to not apply the applicator directly onto the spot. Instead, apply the product using your finger or a brush. Personally, I like to use Stick or Cream Foundation on any breakouts as they tend to have the heaviest coverage. Eyelids - You can also use concealer to prime your eyelids before Eyeshadow if you run out of Eye Primer. Touch Ups - Using a Flat Concealer brush, you can use Concealer to Correct any mistakes you made when applying your Makeup in particular your Lipstick, Liner and Brows. Using a Concealer to sharpen up the outline of your brows can give them a more defined look. Similarly, when applying a Lipstick, you can use a small bit of concealer to clean up your lip line and help cheat the appearance of Fuller Looking Lips. When creating a winged liner look, you can also use concealer to sharpen up the flick and correct and mistakes. Contouring - Taking a concealer two to three shades darker than your skin, you can contour around your hairline, under your cheekbones, down the sides of your nose, under your jawline and in the socket of the eye. Highlighting - Taking a concealer one or two shades lighter than your skin, you can highlight or brighten certain areas of your face using concealer. Specifically under your eyes, down the centre of your nose, cupids bow, highpoint’s of your cheekbones, chin and forehead. How do I find my Concealer shade?Under Eye - Slightly Lighter if possible, It is recommended to choose a Concealer shade that is one or two shades lighter under the eye. Personally, as a pale person this is near impossible so I choose a shade that best matches my foundation. When testing in a store, I would suggest testing an under eye concealer near the veins of your wrist, this should give you a good idea as to what will work best. Blemishes - Exact Shade Match, When covering blemishes it is best to choose a shade that is the closest match to your foundation or skin. When hiding blemishes with concealer, we usually do this step as we want to cover them. If we were to apply the wrong shade of concealer over a blemish this would just make it even more noticeable. Hence, why we stick to the closest shade match possible here. Highlight - One to Two Shades Lighter Contour - Two to Three Shades Darker *Remember* The Colour Wheel, Opposites cancel each other out! Green is the opposite of Red Orange is the opposite of Blue Yellow is the opposite of Purple So with that in mind if you’re trying to correct redness use something green and so on… How do I Apply Concealer?Liquid - Liquid Concealers are very easy to apply and blend. You can use just about anything to apply, fingers, brushes or sponges. My personal favourite would be a dome shaped, fluffy blending brush. Cream - I think Cream Concealer is best applied when using your fingers. As cream concealers tend to be quite thick, the warmth of your finger will make the consistency much easier to work with. Alternatively, I would suggest a flat head concealer brush. Stick - Much like cream concealers the warmth of your finger is the best option here. Also try not to apply the stick directly onto any blemishes to avoid cross contamination. When concealing a spot, simply apply some product using your finger instead. Powder - Tap some of the mineral into the lid and using your finger, sponge of a brush, pick up some product in a swirling motion. If using a brush, tap off the excess and then sweep the concealer onto the area you wish to conceal. Why does my Concealer appear cakey? If this problem appears when using concealer under the eye, then I would recommend using an eye cream first. If it is caking on other areas of your face make sure you are moisturising well underneath first. Lastly, double check that you are using the best concealer formula for your skin type. Do Concealers Expire?Yes. Most products have a PAO (Period after Opening) symbol, which indicates how long the product can be used for after opening. For example if your Product has 18M on it, this would mean that once you’ve opened the product you’re advised to stop using it after 18 months. The expiration period usually differs depending on the type of Concealer you use (Liquid, Cream or Powder). If it’s not indicated on your product Generally speaking it’s 6-12 months for Liquids and Creams and 18-24 months for Powders. A cream or liquid formula contains more ingredients which shortens the shelf life and has an increased risk of bacterial contamination. As oppose to Powder where the dry formula doesn’t allow bacteria to grow as easily.

Hi Elizabeth, I would be similar. An eye cream does help underneath a liquid concealer. Alternatively you could try switching to a cream concealer! x
